Letter from the President of Indian Lakes Estates – August 2011 Issue #1

Members,

The community had a very eventful summer. The most exciting aspect of the summer has been to see how involved our property owners are.

· The Beautification Committee organized a community sale to raise funds to be used to improve the appearance and safety of our community. As a result of the many donations to the sale and the work of many volunteers, the sale netted approximately $3500! Pictures of the sale can be found on the website.

· Using some of the funds raised at the community sale the fencing bordering Hiwassee Road over Rainbow Lake Dam has been replaced with a much more substantial Locust post and rail fence. This project would not have happened if it were not for a dedicated group of our members who constructed all 430 ft of fencing in ONE day!! Great job folks!!! Go to the website to see pictures of this project.

· Besides the time that many of our members have donated to the community, several members have made monetary contributions for use on specific projects. Without these funds some of the projects could not have been accomplished.

· The community gathered at the Waterfront Park to celebrate July 4th and there are plans for an even bigger party at the Park to celebrate Labor Day. That party will be on Sunday, September 4. See the details at the website.

· To assist our members who are attempting to sell their property, a box has been installed near the bulletin board. Members and their realtors may place flyers in the box advertizing their Indian Lake Estates property.

While there is reason for excitement about the accomplishments of the community, we do have several matters of concern.

Our finances are very tight and there are desperate needs for additional paving. Of particular concern is the deterioration of Indian Lake Road beyond the Toxaway Trail fork. However, with the limited funds available it will be next spring before any paving can be done. At the Annual Meeting (September 10), the 2012 Budget will be reviewed with the membership. You will see that there is an attempt to finance as much paving as possible without jeopardizing the financial stability of the Club.

Our tight financial situation is exasperated by the number of delinquent assessment payments. Your Board is working vigorously to take all necessary steps to bring assessment current or to take appropriate legal action when necessary.

I encourage you to attend the Annual Membership Meeting, September 10th. Be sure to send in your ballot for election of two board members by the due date, September 2nd. If you cannot attend the meeting, assign your voting rights by proxy by the deadline of September 2nd.

At the last Board of Directors’ meeting it was decided that our newsletter, Smoke Signals, has become redundant. News is now disseminated to the membership as it happens by way of “news blast” emails and by postings on the Club’s website, https://indianlakeclubinc.com . Quarterly the president will publish a letter to the membership to summarize the activities of the Board and its concerns. Smoke Signals was a great means of communicating back when information was disseminated by snail mail but with the website and email the newsletter would only be repetitious of information already available to you.

If you are one of the few members who have not furnished an email address to the Club, please contact Ed Tisdale, ilcsec@comporium.net. If we have your email address, information can be delivered to you quicker and cheaper that delivering it to you by postal service. If you would like, Ed Tisdale can assist you in creating an email account.

In closing, I want to thank all of the Board members and the community in general for all of the support that I have received during my term as president. As a result of the hard work of your Board, our community is a better place to live/visit than it was a year ago. The future should make our little paradise in the mountains even better!!!
